Mary Vollmer concluded her lifein the predawn hours of January 24th 2016.  She fell asleep the night before with her family at her side and never woke up.  She will be missed.  Never impressed with the status quo, she always strove to make the world around her better and created a life rich with experience.  An only child, she formed a deep friendship with another little girl named Kathy who also lived on Queen Anne Hill and the two would be like sisters for the rest of their lives.

As a young woman following World War II, she and her childhood friend Kathy moved to Honolulu, Hawaii to live for several years.  Mary moved to Spokane and Kathy back to Seattle.  Mary managed a trip alone through Europe.  She married at the age of 30, and began to raise a family with her husband, Chuck.  First came twin girls and four years later a son.  Mary and Chuck, became active in church at Saint Augustine's Catholic Church on the South Hill of Spokane and Mary eventually converted to the Catholic faith.  She was soon teaching Sunday school and active in lay leadership in the church.

A family of modest income, both were hard workers and careful savers.  Mary worked for an insurance agency and Chuck worked for the state highway department.  They both found they were most relaxed during their time at Liberty Lake. Located 10 miles east of Spokane, it was the same lake Chuck had taken her sailing during their courtship.  Summer living with gardens and livestock soon turned into year round living as she and Chuck purchased and remodeled a charming home on Liberty Lake and commuted into Spokane each day.  They remained there years after their adutl children moved to other areas.

Following retirment, Mary and Chuck were to move several more times.  One move would be back to the Seattle area, on Mercer Island to spend time with a married daughter, grandchildren and their son, and of course time spent with their dear friends Kathy and Bo.  Another move later would be to the Sun Vally, Idaho area where another daughter had married and now had a baby boy.  Mary remained active in the c ommunity for several years following Churck's death in 2011 until her own health started to fail and she returned to her childhood home of Seattle in 2014.

Travels, concerts, and stories, churches, gardens, and libraries, gracious meals with friends and families.  Her life was full.  In her final years at Providence Mount Saint Vincent she was known as a charming woman with a ready smile.  Mary Lou we will miss you.

The Mass of Resurrection will be held in the Pigott Chapel at Providence Mount St. Vincent, 4831 35th Avenue SW, Seattle, Washington on Monday, February 8th, 2016 at 9:30 A.M.
